A Brief History of Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. Our founding fathers started Sigma Nu in response to the hazing that occurred at that time. Two of our founders were former Confederate soldiers; they were heavily influenced and mentored by General Robert E. Lee and many of his peers including the Commandant of VMI, General Francis H. Smith.

Robert E. Lee was the President of Washington College (now known as Washington and Lee) in Lexington. Lee sought and spoke in favor of a quick union and forgiveness between North and South. He instilled these ideals in our founders along with a belief in honor and chivalry. Sigma Nu tradition stems from its military beginnings and Honor based ideals. In 1871, Sigma Nu expanded beyond the boarders of Lexington, VA by forming two new chapters at the University of Virginia (Beta) and Duke University (Gamma).

Today Sigma Nu is in every state, from coast to coast, in two countries, and is one of the most predominant fraternities. Sigma Nu has initiated over 200,000 members and is approaching 250 chapters.
